The Codes of Recommendation
for Welfare ![]()
A half day course covering the key
issues of why poultry welfare is so important for all sectors. Responsibilities
and best working practices are discussed in order to meet the large amount
of legislation, including the five freedoms. It is important that all livestock
producers and stockman understand the implications and effects of poor welfare.
This in turn promotes improved working practices and product quality. Consumer
awareness and poor public perceptions are making it every important that
the key points of this legislation are implemented and understood.
Thermal Stress Management ![]()
A half day modulised version of a part of the ‘Poultry
House Environment' course, concentrating on the effects of hot and cold thermal
stress factors; how these can affect birds and how it can be best managed
in controlled environments. A better understanding of air movements and systems
together with best practices in order to avoid heat stress. Better management
systems are reviewed. Defra booklets on “Heat Stress in Poultry” are provided
Welfare: Meeting Codes
of Practice and Assurance Scheme Requirements ![]()
Meeting
Codes of Practice and chicken assurance scheme requirements can be a daunting
task for any individual, who may not have a full understanding of what is
required to meet the standards. The responsibility for implementation of
welfare practices is discussed and reviewed. This course takes the individual
through the standards and the policies and procedures that need to be implemented,
together with examples of the range of records and documentation required
to be maintained for complete traceability and welfare. Policies are required
to be in place to meet all eventualities and the consequences of non compliance
are highlighted.
Poultry Welfare for Hatcheries ![]()
The legislation and codes of practice for
welfare and the five freedoms are reviewed together with the codes of practice
for the disposal of chicks in the hatchery. Best practice and handling techniques
are reviewed throughout the process
Euthanasia of Poultry ![]()
In whatever system poultry are reared there will always
be occasion when euthanasia must be carried out. It is acceptable for small
numbers to be culled through various methods outlined by the Humane Slaughter
Association. It is important that training is received to complete this task
competently and effectively. This training can either be done as part of
a veterinary health course or the course can be delivered as an independent
module
Live Bird Handling for Catchers ![]()
This course is primarily for those who are
catching and handling birds during depopulation regardless of whether the
birds are being transferred on to the next stage of production or going to
the processing factory, the welfare of the birds is paramount. This course
will ensure that the delegates have the knowledge for compliance with relevant
legislation, be able to enhance their awareness of the factors necessary
for good bird welfare and be able to reduce possible welfare problems by
appropriate handling techniques.
Live Bird Handling at Poultry
Processing Factories ![]()
The importance of bird
welfare in the lairage and handling of birds through to slaughter cannot
be under estimated. This course covers the welfare of the birds through moving,
handling, slaughter, shackling & stunning.
An understanding of the legislation is gained. Methodology and equipment
and the fragility of the bird together with the implications of poor handling
and consequences are reviewed. There are also appropriate fork lift courses
available.
Welfare & Biosecurity for
Maintenance and Service Personnel ![]()
The codes
of practice and legislation for welfare and the onus of responsibility for
particular areas are emphasised. This course is especially targeted for contractors,
maintenance, set up personnel, drivers, placement teams etc who all have
a role to play in bird welfare. Biosecurity measures are reviewed and how
diseases can be transmitted. Disease causing agents and ways of improving
hygiene practices and biosecurity are reviewed.
